ACORN, Ayers, and Republican Voter Suppression

CNN and other cable news services are awash with accusations about Barack Obama’s activities with so-called “radical” organizations and individuals. I have attempted to check out as many of these claims as I can. I urge you to go to the URLs listed below to see for yourself what is behind the claims.

The news organizations are making a big play concerning fraudulent voter registration forms submitted by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). Claims are made that several thousand fraudulent forms have been submitted in several states. Some of the reporting claims that ACORN offices are closed or abandoned and that no one from ACORN is available to discuss these fraudulent activities. These reports create the impression that ACORN is a shadowy organization that operates outside the law. I Googled ACORN and came up with a statement concerning these charges from the organization itself. I make no claim that their statement is true, but simply submit the statement for your consideration. CLICK HERE  Here is an article you might be interested in. CLICK HERE

It is true that the Obama campaign has paid ACORN to assist in voter registration.

Another constant thread on cable news concerns Obama’s links to 60s radical Bill Ayers. The McCain campaign has produced a series of ads that attempt to show that Obama associates with “terrorists” and uses his link to Bill Ayers as evidence. FactCheck.org has a very good article debunking these claims. CLICK HERE

The ACORN piece claims that the charges of fraud are a part of the Republican Party’s attempts to suppress the votes of minority voters. I will continue to check this out and add a report if I find any evidence to support these claims. Here is one article for your consideration. CLICK HERE  And here is another. We are in a very hotly contested campaign and it is important that we try to inform ourselves about the truth of any claim we see in the media.

  1. Great research, Gary. We should all repeat, "The problem with ACORN in Nevada is NOT voter fraud; it is registration fraud."

ACORN tries very hard to root out those lazy people turning in false registrations, but any organization this large will have some problems. On the whole, they are doing a remarkable job.

Voter Fraud is a whole other issue and Ohio is an excellent example of how the Republicans managed that the last election.

  3. ACORN has been in existence since at least 1973 organizing poor and low income people to demand full inclusion in the fruits of U.S. society. It was started in Little Rock.

It has been through a lot of bumps over the years and has supporters and detractors, even within community organizing. (I know lots, on several sides of this.)

But all they did here is MASS voter registration. With the number of people they had involved, there were going to be screw ups -- sounds like they caught a lot of them.

We're watching Republican pathology here: they can't accept that after 8 years of GWB, the country wants desperately to sweep them off the stage -- they think somebody must be cheating. It's sad -- and dangerous to the next President's ability to govern.

  4. Allegations of fraud are a favorite strategy of the Republicans. Yes, Obama's campaign hired ACORN to register voters. Various Republican campaigns have also hired them over the years. The reason it is thought of as a "liberal" organization is that ACORN tries to help the poor, the homeless, the otherwise disenfranchised, and the Republicans don't want that to happen.

Now, McCain is trying to accuse Obama of doing something underhanded in his collection of campaign contributions. He just can't believe that so many people would send in contributions in those small amounts. They think others are cheating because they usually are, themselves.

  5. Great post and links - thank you :).

Betty, found your comment really informative too. You nailed it with the last sentence. The GOP seems to pathologically project their own wrong-doings onto the Dems. I always think it's telling of how they operate, if they think it's the way things are done by others.
